Best Tents, Sleeping Bags & Stoves for Liwa Conditions

Our guides pitch tents in this sand more than a hundred nights a year. This is what survives — written for DIY campers heading out on their own or joining one of our supported self-drive trips.

Tents: fight the sand, not the rain

• Dome shape over cabin shape — wind-shedding matters more than headroom on a dune.
• Full-coverage flysheet: not for rain, for the fine dust that passes through single-wall fabric.
• Fine mesh inner (no-see-um grade) — standard mosquito mesh lets Liwa's powder sand through.
• Long stakes or sand anchors: standard pegs pull out of soft sand instantly. 30cm+ sand stakes, or bury "deadman" anchors.
• Skip pop-up festival tents: one gusty night in the Empty Quarter folds them.

Sleep system: the desert is cold, seriously

January nights fall to 6–8°C, and sand conducts heat away from you fast. Three-part answer:

• Bag rated 0–5°C comfort (not "extreme" — comfort rating) for Nov–Feb; a 10°C bag is fine for Mar–Apr.
• Insulated mat (R-value 3+) — this matters more than the bag; cold comes from below.
• A thermal layer to sleep in, per our packing checklist.

Cooking: wind is the enemy

• Gas canister stove with a wide windshield — or you'll spend 25 minutes boiling water.
• Keep stoves on a board or flat pan lid; a stove sinking into sand is a fire hazard.
• Charcoal BBQ? Bring a raised grill and a metal bin for dead coals — never bury hot coals, a barefoot hazard the next camper finds. More camp-fire rules in the safety guide.
