Best Time of Year for Liwa Desert Camping
Quick answer: November to April is the best time for Liwa desert camping — daytime highs of 24–32°C, cool clear nights, and the Liwa International Festival in December–January. Peak comfort is December to February; peak atmosphere is festival season; peak stargazing is any new-moon week in winter.

Month by month in the Empty Quarter

Months Day / night temps Camping verdict
Nov – Dec 27–32°C / 12–18°C Superb. Season opens; December adds the festival buzz at Moreeb Dune.
Jan – Feb 22–26°C / 8–13°C The sweet spot. Crisp nights — pack proper layers (see our packing checklist).
Mar – Apr 28–36°C / 15–21°C Very good, warming fast. Watch for spring sandstorm days.
May – Sep 40–48°C / 28–33°C Overnight camping not recommended for visitors. Sunset-only trips possible with experienced guides.
Oct 33–38°C / 22–26°C Shoulder month — late October nights become pleasant again.

Three "best times", depending on what you want

For first-timers and families: December to February

Mild days for dune walks and sandboarding, cold-but-cosy nights by the fire. This is when our all-inclusive overnight camps run at their best rhythm — golden-hour dune drive, dinner under the stars, sunrise coffee on a crest.

For atmosphere: festival season

The Liwa International Festival (late Dec–Jan) turns Moreeb Dune into the region's motorsport amphitheatre — hill-climb races up a 300m dune, souq, concerts. Camps nearby sell out early; our festival camping guide and package explains dates, prices and how the shuttle works.

For the sky: any winter new moon

Liwa has the darkest measurable skies in the UAE. Time your trip to a new-moon week between November and March and the Milky Way is naked-eye visible — the whole premise of our stargazing night experience.

What about summer?

Between May and September the Empty Quarter regularly passes 45°C, and overnight camping is genuinely unsafe for visitors. If summer is your only window, talk to us about sunset-only formats — and read the heat sections of our safety guide so you understand why we're strict about this.

Booking timing: December weekends and festival dates are typically fully booked by late October. If your dates are fixed, reserve early — our refund policy gives you a free date change anyway, so booking early carries no risk.
